Richard McBride
LRPS
Haslemere
I
have been fascinated by photography since the age of 10, when I
built my first pinhole camera. I rapidly progressed on to more
conventional optics, and had soon commandeered the under-stairs
cupboard as a darkroom. From black-and-white, I progressed to colour
slide and prints, becoming quite adept, despite my youth, at the
complex processes required for good results. Thirty years later,
although I still have some of my darkroom equipment, I no longer
have the time, or the space, for wet techniques. Fortunately,
digital printing has now improved so much that it can almost rival
traditional methods, and I find the freedom of expression, and ease
of manipulation of digital images is like a breath of fresh air. I
have not yet made the full transition to digital though. Instead, I
use film, and scan into the computer. As you may see from my
portfolio on this web site, my first love has always been for
landscapes, but I have done a fair amount of other work, including
reportage in the 70s, portraits, advertising, illustrative and
industrial. I was represented until recently by Getty Images
(previously Tony Stone). When I retire, I am going to dig out all
that old darkroom stuff, and, (assuming I can still buy silver-based
materials), I will happily relive those days and nights under the
stairs!
