Banstead Downs

Downland chalk woodland and grass.

Coulsdon Common (Happy Valley)

North Downs area varied downland habitats on chalk. Huge variety of flowers, including orchids in late May, June and July, chalkland trees. Good area for butterflies and other insects. Ancient woodland (Devilsden Wood) in area, yew and wild cherry woods. GR TQ 301571

Croydon Market (Surrey Street)

Mon-Fri, mostly vegetables. Colourful stalls and characters. Good for candids (discrete) Meter parking or multi-story. GR TQ 320648

Devil's Punchbowl, Hindhead (National Trust)

Views, wide range of natural history interest e.g. birds, trees, insects. Good for autumn colour. Car park (£) after first half-hour. TQ250520

Guildford

For old buildings and street photography.

Guildford Cathedral

Relatively modern cathedral.

Hampton Court and Gardens

Famous architecture, history and gardens etc. nearby River Thames scenery and boating activity. Gardens (£)

Hutchingson's Bank

Nature reserve area open to public. Full range of chalkland flora and fauna. Near Addington Village with old church.

Leith Hill (National Trust)

Highest point in SE England. Ancient oaks, beeches and hazels. Good for autumn colour.

Polesden Lacy (National Trust)

Gardens and Parkland. (£) Elegant house (£), exteriors attractive. Outdoor music concerts in summer . Country Fair on 1st July

Chalkland ecosystems.

River Wey and Godalming Navigations (National Trust)

Early canal system on River Wey. From Guildford to Weybridge on the Thames and hence to London.

Dapdune Warf (£) (off A322 Woodbridge Road, Guildford, or on foot via towpath from Guildford town centre) is the home of a restored Wey Navigation Barge. Much of photographic interest in the area.

Surrey Villages and beauty spots

To the South of A25 Dorking to Guildford Road: Gomshall, Shere, Friday Street, Abinger and Abinger common, Peaslake, Holmbury St Mary.

Winkworth Arboretum (National Trust) (£) Godalming Many rare trees (over 1000 species) Good for autumn colour and leaf studies. GR SU 990412

Wisley Gardens (Royal Horticultural Society)

Plants of all kinds. (£) Off A3 eastbound GRTQ069581.

Titsey Place

North of Limpsfield. A Family home, now owned by a private trust.  Guided tours of the house, superb walled vegetable garden which has recently been restored (£). Limited opening times in Spring to Autumn. Excellent for garden and landscape pictures.
